Diagnostic uncertainty leads to inappropriate antibiotic prescribing Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are one of the most common acute conditions seen in primary care.

Around 80% of these patients presenting with acute RTIs will receive antibiotics even though 70% of cases are viral and self-limiting.

  • 80% Patients (with RTIs) are prescribed antibiotics
  • 30% of these patients who need antibiotics
  • 70% do not need antibiotics
